Hike to the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains! At 3114 ft, Sandstone Peak offers sweeping views of the Malibu Coast and the Conejo Valley. We will reach Sandstone Peak via the beautiful and lush Mishe Mokwa / Backbone loop trail in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The total elevation gain from the parking lot is about 1400 ft, but the climb is mostly gentle, suitable for novice-intermediate hikers. Roundtrip hike should be about 3-4 hours.

Important information:
- No cell phone signal at the mountain.
- Take proper measures for sun protection.
- Pack water (at least 2 liters), snacks, and lunch to eat at the summit
- Long pants suggested as we are in rattlesnake season. Hiking boots would be helpful but good athletic shoes should be fine.

Getting there:
The trailhead parking lot can be a bit tough to spot, so we encourage carpooling if possible. If heading there on your own, we suggest that you program the specific GPS coordinate (34.1113, -118.9267) into your phone, or print out directions in advance. If driving west on the PCH, turn right at Yerba Buena Rd (look for Neptune’s Net restaurant for the turnoff). Yerba Buena Rd is very windy; follow it about 15 minutes (6.5 miles), and look for the trailhead parking lot on the left after a sharp turn in the road. If driving west on the 101 freeway, take the exit for CA-23 South, follow 7 miles, turn right on Mulholland Hwy then quick right onto Little Sycamore Canyon Rd, which becomes Yerba Buena Rd. Parking lot will be on the right in about 5 miles. If the parking lot is full, there is some additional parking just up the hill on Yerba Buena Rd.
